SF, CA to OAXACA -- Any tips for air travel?

I can't find any flights that don't involve at least 2 stops each way (e.g., SFO-LAX-MEX-OAX). Anybody got any tips for a less painful itinerary? (This is for Christmas 2004, which just makes it worse!) Thanks!

We made the same trip last June. Try Mexicana from SFO to MEX with a connecting flight to OAX.
We also took a "puddle jumper" from OAX to Huatulco and then connected directly back to MEX for the trip back home.
The entire experience was a breeze. We are frequent flyeers with Mexicana and have always enjoyed our flights.

Thanks, Earl, but Mexicana is showing no seats at all in either coach or executive class for our dates. Any other ideas?

Try Continental. They fly through Houston with just one stop.

Thanks, tt. I discovered that yesterday. But all the Continental flights for our dates next December are full! I managed to get a decent itinerary on Mexicana,at a horrific price of $800 per person. As one of my friends who is going on this trip said, I could fly to Bangkok for that.

Just had a bizarre experience with Continental that may be of interest to anyone who looks at online availability as a first step in booking air tickets.

The Continental website shows no seats available for my December 2004 SFO-OAX round trip. When I phoned Continental, I found out there are plenty of seats and I was able to book with no problem. (For $150 less pp than Mexicana, BTW!)

No one could give me any explanation for why this situation existed, even though I pointed out that they almost lost my business.

I think the world of booking airline tickets gets wierder every day. I do look on the web for prices, tmes, etc., but more and more I find myself calling the airline to book seats, mostly because I can't figure out how to get a convenient departure and return when the website only offers me certain combinations.
