Seeking ideas for a day on our own in Cozumel
Maybe I should post this in the cruise forum, but thought I might get better answers here.
We will have a day on our own in Cozumel during a cruise in April. We are not really tour people and would like to just explore on our own. I have found some ideas online, but was hoping someone that knows the city could offer a plan.
One person in our group has some mobility issues, so we can't walk everywhere, which is what we would normally do. I thought about renting a car or jeep for the day and exploring that way. Any thoughts on that?
Our interests include nice beaches and places to have a drink on the beach, shopping and good places to eat. Any special sites of interest would be neat, too.
Thank you!

I helped my sister plan this same thing. They ended up taking a taxi into the downtown area. Having a nice meal. Doing some shopping. They found a museum (I think it was).
I personally am not comfortable renting vehicles in Mexico and would stick with using a taxi or arrange a private driver.
Sorry this is vague, but that was the general outline of their day and they loved it.

Our favorite place is The Money Bar. Silly name, but beautiful spot. About a 5 min. taxi ride from the cruise port. Lounge chairs with shade, friendly waiters bringing food & drink at your beck & call. Open air restaurant. Gorgeous setting, small beach, good snorkeling. No admission fee. Bring aqua shoes. They rent snorkeling gear if you don't have your own. Never crowded.

Thanks for the replies, Suze and linda8. Taking a taxi is looking like a good option. The Money Bar looks fun. About how much is the taxi fare and do you use Mexican or U.S, money?

We are currently staying at a small resort right next to the cruise port in Cozumel. The name of the resort is El Cid la Cieba. There are people here from the cruise ships that are here on a day pass. Apparently there are two different programs. You can pay $20 and get three drinks, snorkeling, which is really pretty good here, Beach club pools etc. Or you can pay $48 and have an all-inclusive day including food and Drink. It may cost more if you purchase it as an excursion on the ship.
We are not doing the all-inclusive, but I checked the menu at the restaurant here and it looks really good. Everyone complements the food. The drinks are good..
If you walk off the cruise ship and turn left it is maybe a quarter-mile down on the Ocean side.

I spend a month on Cozumel every winter, so I know the island fairly well. My suggestion would be:
- take a taxi from port (if you dock at the port farthest away from town) or walk if you are at the port right in town, to do a little shopping right on the main street (Melgar). If mobility is a huge issue, take a taxi to Del Museo on the North end of the main street. There you can have breakfast on their beautiful open air balcony. The view of the water is outstanding.
- have a tour of the museum downstairs for a little history of the island after breakfast.
- do all your shopping at Los Cinco Soles. It is only a couple of blocks north of the museum. They have everything you will find anywhere else. The prices are fair. There is none of the crazy haggling for a better deal.
- then you can grab a taxi and either take a trip around the island to see the beaches on the East side. Maybe stopping along the way to sample foods/drinks. Negotiate a set price with the driver before departing. He will then stick with you the whole way, waiting at each stop.
- or take a taxi (a short ride) to Buccano's on the north end of the island. It is a stunning beach club with amazing food, a pool on the beach, massage, dining overlooking the water, snorkeling, lots of shade, some of the best dressing rooms, lots of activities nearby. They charge a small fee to enter ($10) which is then deducted from your food and beverage tab.
