Hi,
I am planning a one week vacation in Costa Rica. I was wondering how safe it was to go there by myself (woman). I am not sure yet if I will be staying in a resort or not. However, even if I am in a resort, I am the kind of person to rent a car and go by her own. Any experience or recommendation?
Thanks

I love your attitude, and your guts. You remind me of a lady we met while we were in CR. (We just returned from an 18-day trip.) Personally, I would stay way from the Caribbean side. Stay away from any of the Central Valley area (San Jose, Escazu, Heredia, Alajuela) and take advantage of the Nicoya Pen. beach towns. They're so beautiful and peaceful, and I felt very safe the entire time. The lady we met lives in Manuel Antonio, and has lived there for 2 years. She LOVES it.

I would recommend:
Manuel Antonio
Montezuma
Mal Pais/Santa Teresa
I would stay away from Samara, as a lady there told us "Don't go on the beach on Saturday night. It's not safe." Who wants to feel any area of their vacay is off limits?!?! Not me.
Just my two cents. Have a wonderful time!!!
I would just use common sense, like any other place in the world. My 4th solo trip to CR is coming up, if that gives you any reassurance. I wouldn't go strolling around downtown San Jose at night alone, but then again there are parts of my own city I wouldn't do that either.
I would suggest places to go if I knew what you were looking for - rainforest, beach, volcano, etc - and base it on that, that you're solo wouldn't really factor IMO.
My first trip to CR was alone for 2 weeks, and I had no trouble. I though, never ventured out at night, unless with other people whom I met.
I met a ton of people, had a great time, and have been back 5 times. You'll love it.
