We (two ladies)stayed at the Plaza Hotel, right in the heart of town on Avenida Central, which is a pedestrian only street. (Hotel Plaza, Apartado 2019-1000, Frente Boulevar, San Jose, Costa Rica, ph. (506) 257-1896, fax (506) 222-2641, email: [email protected]). It was $43 including taxes and breakfast or $37 w/o breakfast. The rooms are a little small but had two twin beds, color tv/remote, carpet, phone, pretty rooms, and great location. Gabriel, the desk clerk was very helpful and knowledgeable. He even loaned my friend his leather jacket when we went out to dinner, as it was cool and raining and she didn't have a coat.

The hotel is right next door to a Subway shop.

Have a great time!
Sandy

Dear Sandy,
Thanks for the information. My son and a friend are going to be in Costa Ricain March. Two questions--is it $43 each, or $43 for the room? Our son is on a limited budget, and $43 by himself might be too much--but sounds great for 2. Was there a bath? They will be flying Sansa(?) airline from San Jose to Tamarindo--do you know how easy or difficult it is to get to the airport? THANKS for your help-we have never been to that part of the world.

It was total, not per person. It's easy to get around by taxi and inexpensive, the hotel will call one for you (since it's on a pedestrian only street). The rate for the room was cheaper if you didn't eat breakfast. Yes, it had a great bath (w/tub and shower). This was a nice place to stay and right downtown.

Dear Sandy, Thanks again for the hotel information. I have passed it on to my son with the recommendation that he book it. I appreciate your help!

Sandy's recommendation sounds excellent.
Here's a website for you (rather, your son) to check out.
Jose's very small B&B has received excellent reviews on another website targeted at very low budget travelers. I can't speak for it personally as we stayed at a hotel outside downtown San Jose to escape from the noise.

http://www.villajosebandb.homestead.com/
