Riviera maya

We are looking for a hotel along the Riviera Maya that still feels like Mexico, no a mini-US. Does this still exist? We have been told that Puerto Morelos is nice and Tulum. We do not want an all inclusive, more interested in a boutique hotel and on the beach. Any good ideas?

I haven't been to the area since 2009, but I think Puerto Morelos still has the feel you are seeking. At least, that's what I read!

You might want to look at the Rough Guide and / or the Moon Guide -- both have, IME, excellent coverage of this area.

Well there are no all inclusives in Tulum, although there are a few AIs that have Tulum in their name they are not in Tulum. Depending on time of year, prices are higher now in Tulum.

We went to Tulum a couple years ago - lots of small hotels on the beach. The beach is absolutely beautiful, and the area is very laid back. Some of the hotels are pretty basic, some are much more luxurious - because the hotels generate their own electricity and depend on the aquifer for water, amenities like AC, mini-fridges, and swimming pools are in short supply - some places have them, but they aren't a given.

we were in Puerto Morelos about 5 years ago. It still had a small fishing village feel to it, with a small town square where the local kids played basketball, and a nice little church. Of course there are tourists and a handful of good restaurants, but there was also a pretty authentic crafts market. I would agree with November's description of Tulum. Tulum also has a very busy little downtown away from the beach lined with restaurants, tacky gift shops, and local businesses. The back streets can be quite 'Mexican feeling'.
