Try the US State Dept.
travel.state.gov/travel_warnings.html or the Canadian equivalent
http://www.voyage.gc.ca/dest/intro-en.asp.

gopgirl, I'm guessing the original post was speculative in nature and there is nothing new on the State Dept. site regarding Rio. I'm heading down next week and I'll let you know if I notice anything unusual.

Flyboy - Thanks!! I appreciate it! Are you staying at the InterContinental while in Rio? If you can recommend a specific room# - one with a terrific view - I would appreciate it. Ha! You are a pilot? My dad had his commercial pilot's license - he flew small Cessnas around for years. Lots of fun! Turbulence does nothing for me after that. Ha!

Hi,

If you check in Yahoo news they have some information on what's is going on in Rio now. The situation is not what I can call good but if you are careful you won't have any problems. Don't let everybody know you are a tourist try to dress up like a Brazilian, basic jeans, T-shirt (do not bring the one you bought in Cancun or Paris!!) don't speak English too loud, and always make sure nobody is following you. Do not carry too much money and in case someone tries to robber you give them what they want otherwise you might get shot (if you have no money you also may get shot so make sure you always have 20 reais (about 6, 7 dollars).

RIO DE JANEIRO: The city continues to experience a high incidence of crime. Tourists are particularly vulnerable to street thefts and robberies on and in areas adjacent to all the main beaches in the city. Walking on the beaches is very dangerous at night. Recent efforts of incarcerated drug lords to exert their power outside of their jail cells have resulted in serious disruptions in the city, violence directed at the authorities and incidents of crimes against property, including after-hours shootings and explosions set off outside hotels and restaurants frequented by tourists. While these occurrences have not resulted in any injuries to U.S. citizens, visitors and residents alike should be aware that inconveniences such as closed shops and disrupted municipal services are likely. In Rio de Janeiro City, motorists are allowed to treat stoplights as stop signs between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. to protect against holdups at intersections. All incidents should be reported to the tourist police, who can be reached at 511-5112.
