Renting a car in Cancun

Does anyone have any up-to-date information about car rental agencies in Cancun?
(both positive and negative)
Many thanks.

I've always used Easyway, no problems at all, I take all the insurance including zero deductible. That way you are covered for everything except tire and glass ($5 excta per day if you want to add it). I have also once used Cancun RentaCar, again all went well.
If you decide to rent, rent from a local agency rather than using a third party site such as Kayak or Expedia as they will usually not include all needed insurance.
I drive the speed limit and have never been stopped by police.
Merry Christmas

I used a third party company, Autoeurope which most certainly did include all the necessary insurances and was less expensive than the other local companies, at least for my rental requirements. The rental itself was with Europcar.

Max. Liability insurance for AutoEurope is equivalent of less than U$7000. Is that considered sufficient?

Glad it worked out for you Odin, the reports I have read about Kayak, Expedia, Orbitz, etc. is that they do not include the insurance, then when the person who booked that goes to pick up the car gets all upset when he/she finds out they have to pay a lot more money ("What? But Kayak said my car was going to only cost me $50 per week). And then post reviews stating the car company was cheating them or trying to rip them off.

I booked and paid for the rental in advance and opted for the refundable deductible option. Meaning that I did not have to pay extra to reduce the deductible and it means that if I did have an accident and had to pay the damages up to the amount of the deductible, it would be refunded. Even if I didn't take this option, the max deductible was under $1000. Easyway do not have an office at the airport, they are not open 24/7 and their one way drop off fee was expensive. As I said, Autoeurope suited my rental requirements; it might not suit yours. I prefer an all inclusive price where I don't have to pay any extras at the car rental desk and I prefer not to have to add the car rental basic daily price + daily CDW + taxes + fees + airport surcharge + + + whatever else and I prefer to prepay and I prefer on airport rentals as opposed to off airport with shuttle transfer to car rental pickup location.

Re Expedia, when you book the car rental you can add car rental insurance during the booking process. The T&Cs are available to be read and states what the deductible is, similar with Orbitz, you can add car insurance when reserving the car, their insurance T&Cs said no deductible. Kayak is a comparison site which redirects and is not a booking site. Only those who don't pay attention to what they are booking and what it includes are the ones who later post reviews stating they were ripped off.

Thanks for your replies.
I've noticed that some of these agencies have user-friendly sites that will give you all necessary insurance info. Others are not as clear.
I prefer to deal directly with the agency (or the hotel) when booking, though Kayak certainly helps for comparison shopping.
Alamo, Avis, Easy Way and (Cancun)American have been mentioned to me. Anyone else with feedback?

I will be renting a car from cancun airport in February. I have done extensive research on this topic as it is the only part of my vacation that gives me serious anxiety. I have heard mixed reviews from almost every company. Its almost as though if you present yourself as vulnerable and uneducated on insurance options and additional fees when you step up to the rental counter you are likely to be taken advantage of. This is just my impression from what I have read. Once again I have not rented yet but from the information I have gathered here are my findings....please correct me if I am wrong on any of these. Avant seems like a great company. They have an off site location for rental but deliver your car to the airport so ther is no waiting in a line being hassled by timeshare representatives or waiting for a shuttle to take you to their location. They also pick the car up at the airport as well at the end of your stay. They will price match with avis and easyway (and even go a little less). I did get a quote from them for my trip and they have been good to work with thus far. As far as affordability I have found the best rate with U-Save. You must add the personal Liability Insurance into your quote but even with this added in their prices are literally half of the competition. As tempting as this is I am hesitant as I haven't heard reviews on them. Does anyone have experience with this company? I have found Payless, Avis, and Alamo to be comparable with rates and of course Easy way was significantly less.

Don't know Avant.
Went with Easyway on first trip and didn't hesitate to use them again. (The only negatives I have ever read concerned delivery of a car to a resort, not airport pickup.)
Easyway states all rate, insurance and taxes online, and the only change at the office has been a discount for AAA membership by showing card or for paying cash.
Their rep has always been waiting at the airport, outside the terminal in the easy-to-find place they designate, dressed in an easy to spot shirt with company logo. Never had to wait for them. They've even driven me over to the other terminal to get pesos out of the one ATM that charges cards from my bank no fee. (And we just walk straight out of the terminal, purposefully enough I guess that we never got hassled by, or were aware of, any timeshare folk others speak of.)
I wouldn't want to try to return a car in the chaos of the airport. Our bags are in the car, we pull into the Easyway yard, and they send someone out to drive us over and drop us off.
I was anxious, too, before our first trip, so I hope this helps quiet any nervousness for you.

Not to take anything away from the main issue, but do you really need to rent a car. We have been going to the Yucatan Peninsula area for a very long time and I can honestly say that you can be anywhere anytime with the local transportation systems available. Wether it be taxi, colectivo, bus lines 1st and 2nd class, they are all very reliable, safe and very economical. If you have a good idea as to where you want to be, there is absolutely no problem. No need to worry about rental issues and insurance and scratches and dents, parking, directions and maps, road conditions, refueling, time and schedules, traffic conditions and stress...
The ADO bus lines (similar to Greyhound)are clean, smooth, air conditioned with on board toilets and have a very good record for being on time...Should you want more details, you can visite their web site. Either way, you will most certainly have a great trip as the Yucatan has so much to offer !

Rohelio-
Two of us will be in Merida for a week before coming to Costa Maya and will be doing much as you suggest.
But we'll be joining others the following week and will be staying south of Akumal, at Jade Beach - no restaurants or shops within easy walking distance.

Like Misty Shultz previously commented, I did extensive research and came up with Avant. I have used Easyway in the past and was satisfied but recently read unfavorable reviews. The downside of Avant is that to make a reservation you must give your credit card number. Also if you cancel within 24 hours of your pickup time you are charged 10%. They offered full insurance but did not have zero deductible but assured me that the quoted price was all I would be charged in any event. Their price was about $100 cheaper (for 9 days) than Easyway. This really did not play into my decision to go with Avant, it just sounded like a better company. Time will tell! Any comments on Avant appreciated.
