Recomendations on getting to Tikal from Belize City

Jump to last reply

We arrive in Belize City for a 7 night stay in Belize at noon. We are debating going to Tikal for 1-2 nights and then to Ambergris for scuba, snorkeling, and relaxation. I would like to get your take on how to get there and if it is worth it.

My ideal would be to get to Tikal in time for the sunset tour after arriving in BZE at noon. We would then do the sunrise tour and make our way to San Ignacio for the flight to Ambergris at 3:45. Is this too aggressive or even possible?

1. Any good operators that can arrange for ground transport to Tikal from Belize City? I would prefer to avoid public bus on this trip. We arrive at noon so I am not sure i want to kick around Belize City for 5 hours until the flight to Flores unless there are things worth seeing in Belize City. Is it worth just getting ground transportation so we would arrive in Tikal by the time the flight from BZE would leave? Even if you fly to Flores it is still another hour plus incidental time.

2. We have thought about staying at a place in San Ignacio but it sounds like the sunrise and sunset tours of Tikal are a must if you go. Is it worth the expensive day trip? If so, any operators? It sounds steep to pay $200 a person just for a day trip that could be busy and very hot.

3. Anything else to see around Tikal if we stay 1-2 nights.
