Queretaro or Zacatecas??

We are traveling to Mexico at the end of October for 12 nights. We are planning on staying in Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende for a few days each, but are considering also going to either Queretaro or Zacatecas.

We would appreciate any recommendations or suggestions regarding Queretaro or Zacatecas to help us with our decision.

We are flying in and out of the Leon airport, and if anyone has advice regarding the order in which to visit our choices would also be appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Logistically, it probably makes more sense to do Queretaro instead of Zacatecas. Zac is some 2 hours from BJX not including transfers from the airport to the Leon bus station, while Queretaro is only 45 minutes from San Miguel. So, while in San Miguel you could do day trips to Queretaro as your schedule allows, maybe even keeping your hotel in San Miguel and getting a cheap hotel in Queretaro for a night. Hotel Hidalgo, basic and clean, in centro is about $33 US a night and well located.

Haven't been to Zacatecas, but we enjoyed our stay in Queretaro some years ago very much. An historical center of Mexico.

I personally prefer Zacatecas. It is less touristy, smaller and there exists some great pyramids nearby (called La Quemada, 30 mins away). I hope you will enjoy it!!!

If Zacatecas, don't miss the mask museum.

I preferred Zacatecas with its outdoor musical events and opera house.

I haven't been to Zacatecas yet myself, but it is the favorite city of a friend of mine who lives in the region.
