Puerto Vallarta Crime?
I am going down to Puerto Vallarta for the holidays and all I ever hear about are the kidnappings and robberies. It mainly sounds like I cant leave my hotel or even my room. I am really not looking forward to going because of it. Is it really as bad as everyone says?

Relax. I have been going to PV since 1985 & have never seen/experienced a serious crime. PV is far safer than any large American city. Just use normal common sense. Don't get wasted than wander around town or walk the beaches late at night. I have three hard & fast rules when traveling.
1. I am polite to everybody
2. I never flash money
3. I do not go where I am not welcome
In twenty years of Mexican travel & 40 of international travel I have never been a victim of a crime.

Most of the reports you may have heard, did not come from Puerto Vallarta, but probably from Mexico City or the border towns.
It's as if I hear of drive-by shootings in South Central Los Angeles and become worried about visiting Santa Barbara.
I would say that Vallarta is safer than Santa Barbara.

I have never heard of the problems you describe. We go frequently to Los Muertos Beach in the South Old Town. Follow the rules of the first poster. There is a lot of activity on Los Muertos Beach and the Malecon in the "El Centro" part of town in the evening. Just stay with the crowds. If you are not staying in these two areas, I can't comment. And, its really not Puerto Vallarta if you are not visiting El Centro and the Malecon area and south across the River Cuale. These areas are safe, you sure don't have to stay in your room.

It is not PV where you are hearing of kidnapping or robberies. I've vacationed there about 15 trips (spending maybe a total of 7 months time) and never experienced crime of any type.
Of course, don't get drunk and act stupid, don't leave your wallet on the beach and go swimming, be polite to the local folks, keep your wits about you, don't wander down a dark alley or along the beach alone at night.
I am curious who you are talking to that you ask the question "Is it really as bad as everyone says?" because I have never heard anyone who is familiar with Puerto Vallarta say anything of the sort.
