PROBLEMS WITH AIR TRAVEL
We are supposed to leave for Brazil in three weeks and read some very concerning information in today's LA times. We are taking a number of domestic flights and are concerned about delays and safety issues. Any current information that anyone has would be greatly appreciated. We are leaving out of Sao Paulo, flying to Campo Grande then Campo Grande to Cuiba and the ultimately back to Sao Paulo after visting the Amazon. We are really looking forward to this trip but do not what to put ourselves in a dangerous siutation.

hiya, hopefully you should be fine. There were a few problems some weeks and months ago, but the recent ones, even this weekend were due to bad weather. The main runway at one of sao paulo airports ( congonhas ) is closed for reforms and so all planes using secondary ones. Sometimes in am bad mist and fog closes down airport for a while delaying things. Most flights go thru sao paulo and delays etc cause a knck on effect all over the country. I would suggest though, bring a couple of good books, and patience. The pan american games are being held in Rio for the next month starting 13th so will be even more poeple travelling than usual. The situation should be ok, but delays are not so uncommon due to weather as is winter and we get think fog in ams.
Any more help needed just ask, are you not coming to Rio

Hmmm....didn't know a work slowdown was a weather event? ;-)

But I think the poster is more worried about things like the two planes clipping each other.
Of course, two planes clipped each other at O'Hare this week, so is it any safer here?

hiya, I meant that the most recent ones this weekend were due to bad weather and some of previous. yes there had been a work slowdown but hopefully now that is all past and things will be back to normal. As for safety, I fly here in Brasil a lot and do not think it's necessarily any more unsafe than anywhere else Ive flown.

Yeah, closing the runway due to gang shoot outs is a common occurrence here in Chicago. ;-)
But anyway, this is an enlightening read: http://preview.tinyurl.com/29bzoa
