Playa Hermosa or Playa Negra

I know, I know it's last minute but I am taking my family to Costa Rica over Xmas (adult children) and there are not a lot of choices for where to stay in Gauanacaste. We do not surf ( but I am sure we would be willing to try) but love the beach. However, we also want to venture elsewhere to try other activities- hiking, water rafting, volcano sighting, possible zip lining, for example. Is one of these beaches a better bet for both the beach as well as a home base for other adventures. Time is running out to get this locked up so I really appreciate the help. Thanks.

We like the Playa Hermosa area--you can venture out in either direction and find interesting things to see and do. Haven't stayed at Playa Negra.

It all depends on what you are looking for. Tamarindo is developed, expensive with lots of restaurants, nightlife and shops. Playa Hermosa (the one near Playas del Coco) is much smaller and quieter. Here you would mostly focus on beach and water activities. If you want the occasional night life, you can always head for Playas del Coco which isn't far.

Playa Flamingo is nice, has a big marina with lots of boats and also and you can easily go to nearby Playa Potrero, Conchal or Brasilito (all within about 7 miles).

Playa Negra is a tiny place, heaven for surfers and those who want the rustic beach experience.
