Playa del Carmen hotel

This is our first trip to Mexico, leaning toward PDC. I need help w/ where to stay.We'd like a beautiful beach and a pool, A/C is a must! Heard a lot about Royal Hideaway and Gala resorts. All inclusive is not necessary. Any recommendations would be appreciated!!
