I plan on staying there, how are the tours? is a guide required for hiking in the park where the hotel is located?

The tours on the property are great. The trails are well marked and you do not need a guide per se to follow them but without a guide you may miss a lot as far as local flora and fauna. Enjoy the Lodge, its a great place.

Sorry to bump the post and/or annoy you, but I'm in need of a little local help. We're staying at Pico Bonito for two nights and want take a pretty extensive hike the first day (we'll arrive around 10 am) and, if possible, to kayak the second. Nights there are May 4th and 5th.

Any suggestions? The lodge suggested a hike to Unbelievable Falls, but it sounds like a flat 2 1/2 hour hike. I'm looking for somewhere around 6 hours. As for the river, what are the rapids like in May? Think a kayak is OK, or would inflatables be preferable? Know anyone who runs s tour with duckies (inflatable kayaks)?

The hike to Unbelievable Falls is not flat, and you can swim in the very pretty pool when you get there. The hike is not very long, it's true. We did it with a guide from Pico Bonito. We don't usually go on guided hikes, but it was very interesting. The guide pointed out the native coffee and cacao and other plants, the different layers of the forest you go through, the birds and animals. We bought a package including some meals and several activities.

We took the "Awesome Weekend" package at Pico Bonito. In March the water wasn't high enough for rafting, so we did the trip to the Cuervo y Salado wildlife refuge. We took a bus to the banana train to the park center (being rebuilt when we were there)and then onto a boat. Saw amazing birds, monkeys, alligators and other reptiles. Then we got a snack on the beach (watch out for sand flies on the beach). It was a very interesting trip, if hot.
