Petit Laffite hotel, Playa del Carmen

Jump to last reply

We are researching a one-week trip, first of June, to the Caribbean, from Boston. First concern is a nonstop flight, and the best flight plan available is on JetBlue to Cancun.

We are still looking at other Caribbean locations, but nonstops are limited. Like to the DR and T&C. Both of those are somewhat less interesting. Don't want a place in the thick of the resorts (all lined up on the beach, as I envision they could be some places).

So I am investigating the Playa del Carmen stretch of beach. A friend recommended this place, but she hasn't been there for a while:

What we like about it:

It looks adorable with turquoise water on the Caribbean

Reasonable price for private RT airport transfer to hotel

Snorkeling right there (this is a prerequisite), and also a sandy stretch of beach with umbrellas and chairs (probably no service offered on the beach)

Oceanfront bungalows available, at good price with half-board plan. There are four of us, so we'd get 2 bungalows. They have lofts, and look simple but spacious with front deck oceanfront

Free wi-fi (one family member needs it, to keep his new business moving-- although we understand it will be spotty)

Garden setting, with small rescued wildlife refuge on site

Smallish size, with reportedly very good service. I have emailed the hotel, and got back a nice, personalized and detailed response right away.

Food is reportedly very good.

Excursions offered-- we want to visit Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza (full day trip) or nearby Tulum.

Does anyone know the Petit Laffite? I think it was previously another version of that name, then moved to this new site. There may be other properties owned/managed by this company. TripAdvisor reviews are very solid.

Are there restaurants or shops within a mile or so? We could walk or taxi? (Don't want to deal with renting a car.).

Would we feel safe in that neighborhood? And have plenty to do? Although my plan is to enjoy the beach and snorkel, DH and the 20-something's will want adventure. There are scuba excursions available for them, too.

Thanks so much.
