Hi doyicej,

I do several trips a year to Peru for my photography and writing and thought I would throw a couple suggestions to you about your trip.

Cusco is at 11000 feet elevation, so the first day or two keep activities to a minimum. Taking local excursions to nearby ruins (sacsayhuaman and ollantaytambo), and to markets in Pisac can easily be done during these first couple days. Followed up by a train trip to Machu Picchu.

To really get the opportunity to see the Machu Picchu ruins, you can get a two-day entrance pass and stay in the local town of Aguas Calientes for a night. That way you can go to Machu Picchu on your first day, but you don't have to leave at the 3pm bus that most tourists take back to the train. You can have free space once they have left, then take the bus around 6pm down to your hotel. Then the next morning (6 or 7am) take a bus back to Machu Pichhu (20 minute ride up the mountain). The new days bunch of tourists show up around 10-11 am. On this second day you leave Machu Picchu around 3pm and take the train back to Cusco (or spend another night in Aguas Calientes, as there are other activities in the area).

This way you can easily see most of the best parts of Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu and not have to be in a rush or all the time with a crowd of tourists.

Over the last 20 years I have been working with Bob Todd, owner of World Class Travel in Gainesville Florida, to arrange most of my Peru trips. Bob and I have traveled Peru together, and Bob is very knowledgeable about the best places.

(I give Bob a bunch of photos and info that he uses on his web sites)

If you wish, you can consult with Bob, as I am sure he would be glad to answer any of your questions.
Bobs web site is www.peruperu.com
[email protected]

Oh, some of the stories of my trips to Peru are at www.expphoto.com

Davarian
[email protected]
My husband and I had a fantastic trip last June to Machu Picchu,Cusco, Sacred Valley, etc. last June. This included the Inti Raymi festival which I would recommend that you include if you go in June. We highly recommend Southwind Adventures http://www.southwindadventures.com Our experience with them was outstanding. If interested in my report and pictures, go to www.janeandken.com and navigate to Peru. Hope you enjoy your trip--I am sure you will.

Hi doyicej:

My husband and I used South American Expeditions in September for Peru, and they were wonderful. Their company cutomize a trip for us, including days with no tours. We just told them what we wanted to do/see/visit, how much time we had for the entire trip, where we wanted to spend additional time without tours, price range, etc. We made all our arrangements over their web site with Michael, who was very helpful and informative.

If you have more questions about SAE, please e-mail me.

Happy travels.
