Panama City: day trips and overnights

A friend and I will be in Panama for 4 days at the end of June/beginning of July. (We will then continue on for a week in Costa Rica where we have a fully planned trip, and then 5 days in Belize.)

I'd like to get the most out of Panama but am having some trouble with the itinerary. I'd like to spend a day or 2 in and around Panama City (Colon) and then the other day or 2 outside the city. Is it feasible to do a day trip to Bocas del Toro or do we need an overnight there? Also, do we need to book flights/hotel from Panama City to Bocas in advance or can we do it when we get to Panama? Is it at all possible to do San Blas for 2 days and would it be worth it?

We will be doing things like snorkeling, zip lining, rainforest, etc., in CR and Belize so we'd like to concentrate on things that are more unique to Panama.
