We just spent 6 nights at Hot Bobo at 4882 Guatemala in Palermo Soho. Very quiet and close to the Plaza Italia subte station. Many very good (mostly inexpensive) restaurants and inexpensive taxis to everything in the city.
Shopping is better in Recoleta and on Calle Florida.

We stayed at Malabia House for 4 nights and loved the area--more smaller shops and boutiques than in other areas of BA. Stores seemed more geared to 30 somethings. Lots of restaurants and bars too. Taxis are cheap and its easy to go to other parts of BA. Spent 4 nights at the end of our trip in Recoleta and while a more upscale neigborhood, we still preferred Palermo Soho area.
Mikemo thanks for your reply. Bobo is our back up choice.
Yestravel - how would you rate Malabia House ? Any particular room recommendation ?
We stayed at Malabia b4 Bobo or Home had opened so there were limited choices for places to stay in the Palermo area. We stayed in the front room upstairs which was a nice size (I believe the largest they have) and it had a small balcony. It was quiet and comfortable and in a good location for checking out the neighborhood. The bathroom was small and was a few feet down the hall--it was private, but not in your room itself. This was not a problem. We paid about $90 2 years ago. Service was great, very helpful staff and a nice buffet breakfast. Without being able to compare to other places now available, I would say Malabia House is great choice.
Palermo soho and Palermo hollywood are great areas. Yes, I would agree it's for sure a 30's area very hip with restaurants and bars. As far as clothes shopping Palermo boutiques offer the best shopping if you are looking for unique designs. I'm unsure if I would actually stay in Palermo but we were their twice a day to shop and eat. We stayed in Recoleta Taxis are dirt cheap.
I agree with Scottstig, personally I would stay in Barrio Norte /Recoleta area and visit Palermo Soho and Palermo Viejo for shopping and hip eating places.
Taxis are very inexpensive , a ride from Recoleta to Palermo would be around 4 dollars.
I have not found any hotels in Recoleta/Barrio Norte that are on par with the best new boutique hotels in Palermo. Hotels such as the Home and Bobo are the best bargains in Buenos Aires, relative to the price of comporable hotels in the United States or elsewhere. Luxury Hotels in BA cost as much as in the USA....Boutique hotels are half the price of comporable hotels in New York or other big cities in the USA.....
