Overland between Mexico City and LA
Me and my girlfriend arrive in Mexico city in March time.
We are planning to spend a month or so in Mexico and then spend a 1 month or so heading up to LA overland for our connecting flight.
Are the trains the best and most reliable form of transport along that passage, or is coach better?. What sights are there to see along the way?, and is a month enough time, too long etc?

With a few exceptions, such as copper canyon, there are no trains anymore. However, first class bus service is excellent. There are so many interesting places to visit you can easily spend a month. I would take some time checking out various travels guides to see what you want to see and what cities and towns you want to visit.

Tim,
Trains are not an option. Buses are excellent and travel almost everywhere. Here is an idea of the type of trip you could do in 1 month:
Mexico City - Oaxaca - Veracruz - Puebla - Queretaro - Guanajuato - Zacatecas - Mazatlan - Hermosilo - Mexicali - Tijuana - LA
From this cities you have some colonial towns (Oaxaca, Puebla, Queretaro, Guanajuato and Zacatecas) some beaches (Veracruz and Mazatlan, both very Mexican nothing to do with the glitz of Cancun) and some towns along the way to Tijuana (Hermosillo and Mexicali, which I do not like but you have to rest somewhere along the way, and there are some nice desert destinations and secluded beaches along the way).
This is just an idea of what you could do if you deviate a little bit to the south (Oaxaca) and then head north. Further to the south of Mexico City you could find a lot of fantastic choices (Oaxaca, Merida, some Chiapas towns, Campeche, etc) but this would mean some 4 (Mexico City to Oaxaca) to 18 hours (Mexico City to Campeche) of going on the opposite direction to LA.
Another idea entering much more to the southwest of Mexico is:
Mexico City - Puebla - Oaxaca - Tuxtla Gutierrez - Palenque - Chetumal - Cancun - Merida - Campeche - Villahermosa - Mexico City and then going north through Queretaro, Zacatecas and the other towns I mentioned before.
It is a question of what you would like to do and how much travelling you are willing to do.
Best of lucks
