One month trip to Costa Rica

I am helping my friend and her husband ( mid 50's ) plan a one month trip to Costa
Rica Feb 2014. They will be flying into San Jose and probably out as well. They are thinking of having 2 one week stays and some travelling either in between or afterward. They are considering a little casita in Uvita as one of the places. Part of the time they will be renting a vehicle ( definitely a 4x4 in the Uvita area) - they are hoping they will not need a car the whole month. Any suggestions re: itinerary with indications as to when they should be taking buses or shuttles or flights from one destination to another......
A suggestion of another base location would be helpful too.

Thankss

Tulemar Bungalows in Manuel Antonio is really wonderful, lots of wildlife on the property and their own beach. Tons to do in the area and many restaurants that you can walk to.

Have also enjoyed La Fortuna, Monteverde, Tortuguero, the Sarapiqui, and the Osa Peninsula. What are they interested in?

I think they would like to see some wildlife, and spend time in beautiful areas, see the volcano, and spend time on a beach.
they also would like to see where expats live as they are considering spending a good chunk of time somewhere other than Canada when they retire......

For easy wildlife and beach, I'd go with Manuel Antonio and then pair it with La Fortuna/Arenal for the volcano time. There's lots to do in both areas, and many hotel and restaurant choices. Then they can pick and choose other areas to fill in their time.
