One day in Tuxtla Gutierrez

We are considering spending a day in Tuxtla before the start of a birding tour--or not The most highly recommended attraction, the zoological park, is closed on the day we'd be there. And a friend says that the city, while perfectly nice, is pretty dull for a tourist.

What are your thoughts--yea or nay to a day in Tuxtla?

Thank you, baldone! As it happens, Sumidero Canyon is already part of our birding trip, but I appreciate the suggestion.

We were there just for an overnight years ago and it was sort of boring.

I enjoyed an hour or so in Chiapa de Corzo -- you might want to give it a little time. But in honesty, I was disappointed with the Sumidero Canyon -- the ride through it made for a pleasant time, but at a certain point (all too soon), I was ready to move on. YMMV.

I don't suppose you have time to get to Sn Cristobal de llas Casas...

Agree about trying to include San Cristobal instead.

Thank you, all! Sadly, no time for San Cristobal this trip. I think we'll forgo the extra day in Tuxtla...

Agree on the canyon and as I recall it had trash scattered about.

I actually tend to agree that Sumidero was kinda anticlimactic, but it's the type of thing that if you're right there, then there's no compelling reason not to go. I wouldn't rush back unless with friends that haven't been.

As a birder who last year spent a blissful hour beside a roadside trash dump outside Oaxaca City, identifying--or trying to identify--warblers, I assure you that some trash in Sumidero Canyon, however unfortunate, will be of little concern

Thanks again!
