Oaxaca to Mexico City-Take the bus or fly?

After spending a week in Oaxaca we will be spending a week in Mexico City. The bus ride is 6.5 hours and the plane is 1.5, but taking into consideration having to get to the airport 2 hours early, etc., the times are pretty similar and the cost is not very different if I purchase the tickets for the plane far in advance.

My question is: Is the bus ride from Oaxaca to Mexico City scenic? We've been to Puebla last year so we do not want to stop there to break up the trip.

The bus ride is very scenic. Outside Oaxaca you'l cross some stunning desert, closer to Puebla you'll see the magnificent volcano Pico de Orizaba and if you're lucky Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. Finally, you'll climb through forest before reaching Mexico City.

A friend of mine who lives in Mexico says you haven't visited until you've traveled by bus! They're very comfortable.

Agree with Fra. The ADO Platino is the super luxury bus. And while it's not a big deal, you'll save a few pesos by not having to take an authorized airport taxi from MEX to your hotel.

Fra and baldone, assuming you've both taken those buses, how are the toilets? I'd rather stay on the ground but...

Thanks so much. As per your recommendations, we will be taking the bus.

Is there much difference in comfort between the ADO first class and the ADO Platino bus. If I remember correctly from my reading, the first class buses run more frequently than the luxury buses.

>>>how are the toilets?<<<

Don't recall using them but they're the standard, back of the bus location. I assume no worse than normal!

I was hoping maybe on the Platinos they'd have that self-clean-after-each-use feature. And I don't mean self-clean by my-self! Hope springs eternal.
