Oaxaca in march

Hi! My husband and I are taking the kids to Oaxaca in march. Any recommendations? Touristy? Safety? What's not worth the time? What's worth the time. We will be there four days. The kids are 10 and 5.
Any info will be great! Thanks in advance!

Take them to market day in Tlaxcala. Great market, covers multiple long streets with tents overhead, all kinds of wares and foods they will find interesting, with the town church in the middle of it all. Highly recommended. We took a bus there but you can also taxi, which we did on the way back.

I would get a guide and visit several of the towns in the valley outside Oaxaca one day. Our guide, Linda Hannah, was great. She licked us up in her SUV, and she has relationships with several very good artisans in the valley. We visited an older man who makes the famous black pottery that Oaxaca is known for. We got to watch him with his manual wheel, it was fascinating. we also visited a man in another town who makes fantastic knives out of old discarded iron car pieces, just amazing to watch how this is done and the firing/forging in his homemade fire pit. Also stopped at a lovely art museum outside of town that the kids would like, lots of children's art there.

Take them to the chocolate street in Oaxaca city, Mina St. They will love that and so will you. Eat or drink in one of the chocolate cafes there.

The undercover market in Oaxaca is great. There is a bigger market not for tourists called Abastos that I find fascinating, but be careful there, watch your purse and wallets and don't wear any jewelry (I say that from experience).

The ruins at Mitla are great, I would think your kids would love that, and if not, it will at least give them an appreciation for long lost civilizations who did things a lot differently. Half day trip.

In addition to the recommendations above, Monte Alban is a strikingly beautiful and fascinating site.

Oh gosh, I meant Monte Alban, not Mitla. I have not been to Mitla, it was Monte Alban that I went to.

Milta while not nearly as spectacular as Monte has some unique architecture that is still found reflected in the rug designs of local weavers.
