Hotel Maroma is just outside PDC and as five star as you can get. It has a fabulous beach, terrific food and great service. (www.maroma-mexico.com)

I don't really think there are any five-stars in Playa _ the hotels are smaller, more European, not generally all that fancy but still very nice.
If you want the Ritz-Carlton type of thing, you will have to go to Cancun.

Maroma is supposed to be very good but I think it's away from town, and I always thought it had to be an all inclusive. Maybe not. In town, the El Faro is OK, not my personal favorite but a lot of people like it and the pool is very pretty. The hotels I've stayed in recently, all on the beach, are pelicano, maya bric and blue parrot (now something else) and while I liked them, you probably wouldn't consider them fivestar.

my vote would be the ElFaro or the Porto Real. The El faro is small but very elegant. The Porto Real, you can go either al or European as they call it and is very big, I think 300 rooms. Look at the Hotel Colibri-also small but very nice. I would not recommend anything else on the beach.
