New Year's Eve at Chichen Itza
We will be visiting Chichen Itza and spending the night on December 31st. Are there any special events or shows at the ruins because of New Years? I have contacted the hotel we are staying at and never heard back.
Thanks

What would you expect that would be different from any other day? They already have a sound and light show (every night, I think) in the evenings (only 20 minutes, I think it starts at 7 pm in winter, not sure), so don't know what else they could do, it's a holiday so a lot of people may be there.

The small city called Pisté which is right next to the Chichen Itza archeological site would be the place to be IMO. It is a great place with several nice restaurants and shops and what not. I would guess that the inhabitants will probably have fireworks and célébrations at the parc near the Church. We stayed at several hôtels in the area and would certainly encourage you to stay in Pisté rather than the ruins... which will probably close early for the célébrations.
In our case, we will be in Playa for NYE !

Disclaimer - I've never been to Piste on NYE but I do wonder how much will be happening in this small village that night.
If interest, you may want to check out Vallalodid, as it's the 3rd largest city in the Yucatan. There may be more going on in the City Sq.
Vallalodid also isn't all that far from C Itza.
