Finally booked my air, fodor fave hotels appear to be booked in SMA. About to start calling the smaller hotels that don't have websites.(will they speak English?)
1st choice SMA, if not, Best Western Cathedral in Morelia ($86-100/nt), has good reviews would prefer your fave local charm place-anyone? Like to make SMA or Morelia or sim. town as 1-2 home bases; no mid-range on trip advisor,guidebooks msotly 3-4 star.
Arrive 3/10 mid-day, 4-6 hours for bus ride.
1. Morelia tail-end of the butterflies? Sun-Wed wander on foot,museums/galleries street fairs as open --Morelia or SMA
3. day trips based on time energy & charm!Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Leon Patzcuaro, hot springs
4. ? Mex city on final (Sun)night? so no hassle for Mon departure?
Solo trip, like to get away from the tourist fare & still be safe - like to have a good plan, so I can feel free to chuck it and live in Mexico time. Speak fair Spanish. Thank you so, so much for any suggestions. Whew! Thanks!

I may be of help, but need your arrival city/airport for starters.
Maybe MEX as that's your departure?
Nearly everyone will understand your mid level Spanish and most here speak English, but by all means speak your Spanish.
10 Mar may be a getting bit late for the Monarchs - we are going this week.
Leon is not really much of a a tourist attraction, but certainly San Miguel de Allende; colonial Morelia; Patzcuaro; colonial Guanajuato; colonial Queretaro; Zacatecas, and the hot springs between SMdA and Dolores Hidalgo (Atotonilco and DH also) are worth considering.
Maybe way too much for ten days.
I would concentrate on either Zitacuaro (Anganguelo); Morelia; Patzcuaro (and the wonderful artisan pueblos around the Lake - Tocauro; Erongaricuaro; Sta Clara del Cobre; Tzintzuntzan and Capula.
Or, SMdA; Qro; Atotonilco/Dolores Hidalgo/Gto.

mikemo- I know you are the authority, so thank you for your interest. I am having such a time finding hotels. I am flying in and out of MEX, and will to concentrate on SMA and Morelia or one other town. I don't want to drive.
In your experience, would I be able to get on the phone with the smaller hotels/ B&B's and get myself a room reservation at 3 weeks out?
