More Vallarta dining questions
In advance of our upcoming trip I've found lots of good info on dining in PV but I do have a couple of specific questions that I haven't found the answers to..
1) We'll be arriving fairly late in the day and we are staying at the Marriott, so I am wondering if there is a good restaurant in the Marina area for our first night? On other nights we'll surely go downtown but we may want to stay close that first night. I haven't seen much info on dining in the Marina area. Also what's good for simple breakfasts in the Marina?
2) are there any restaurants that serve traditional Oaxacan-style food? We are particularly fond of Oaxacan molés so would love to find some.
3)We'll be there for my big 5-0 birthday and for that celebration (!!!) I am thinking of La Palapa. But not the "Romantic Dinner", I'd actually prefer to be with other diners and not isolated. Should I be considering any other special place? Are there any other beachside places to consider?
thanks in advance!

There are a couple of good places in the Marina whose names I cannot remember. Just take a stroll around the Marina and you'll see them.
For a taste of Oaxaca, go to El Arrayan. Excellent mole.
I think La Palapa is your best best for a celebratory dinner on the beach.
Have a great time!

thanks for thinking of me jbass... here I am ;-)
...but I'm not familiar at all with the Marina. I stayed only one night at Casa Magna when a flight was delayed & had room service for dinner and breakfast at the hotel restaurant (which was very nice and a pretty setting but more expensive than I'm used to paying in town - like more than twice the price for a stack of pancakes).
I don't know if it is "Oaxacan-style" but The Red Cabbage restaurant in Remance makes a mean mole sauce. It's a fantastic restaurant, and very fun.
I'm just not a fan of La Palapa myself (too expensive to be enjoyable for me, too many fussy ingredients in each menu item, and the service too formal for my taste) BUT the location on the beach is stunning, that's for sure.
I wish I could be of more help but I don't know the high-end restaurants. Maybe some places like Trio, Cafe des Artistes, or River Cafe?

I don't know what all you have on your list for dining in PV but these are my favorite places:
The Red Cabbage in Remance
Mariscos Tino's in Pitillal
Cafe de Olla, south-side on B. Badillo
And the rooftop bar at Chez Elena & Cuatro Vientos Hotel at sunset for cocktails, it's on the street up behind the cathedral in El Centro.

thanks all. The Red Cabbage and El Arrayan were definitely two on my list. Also Xitomates. La Palapa probably for the celebratory meal. We really aren't into the high-end stuff except for the one celebration meal---otherwise, we'd prefer more casual, funky places with traditional--or with traditional influence--mexican and seafood.
We'll just have five dinners in PV as we are five nights there, four in San Blas.

My thing isn't necessarily again "high-end" restaurants generally. It's that from my experience in PV, quality of the food served doesn't seem in line (all to often) with the prices. I'm not sure why that is.

Stayed at Marriott in March. Strangely enough we liked the food at the hotel, esp. the lunches at the pool restaurant. Great fish sandwich. The Mexican buffet dinner was really good. We also ate at most of the restaurants at the Marina..None were very good. Sadly, we were not impressed with the restaurants in town either and did eat at most of the well known places. River Cafe was the best of the lot. PV has fab weather and we were very comfortable at the hotel and liked the pool. Got talked into a timeshare experience at the Mayan down the street. That had the best breakfast we had all week. But when we did not by a timeshare for 30k they got real angry with us. Gosh, did they think we would sign on the dotted line for that kind of money without due dilligence? Guess so.

Congratulations on your upcoming 50th. My how fast the years go. You have picked a great hotel. Sorry I don't know any Mexican restaurants at the Marina, but if you are interested in eating at Italian I recommend Portobello, great Italian and you can walk from the Marriott, if you are interested in Steak there is a great steak house also called Buenos Aires it is great. My husband is a meat cutter so he is very fussy and he really likes it. They are the two restaurants we always go to at the Marina, we really do not eat many Mexican meals. LaPalapa is also one of our always stops. Again Congratulations and hope your birthday is filled with a great experience.
