Mexico (Yucatan Peninsula) Non AL suggestions

Husband and I plan to head to Mexico in May for sun and relaxation. Likely to end up at the Iberostar Grand as we hear its great, but we have a pretty good idea of what to expect. Have stayed at several Iberostrar Grands and Riveria AL's (Sercrets Maroma..) Before we book, has anyone stayed at a boutique or non-AL in the Yucatan Peninsula that has service, beach and food similar or better to than the Grand? The Ritz in Cancun is an option, but not too excited to stay in Cancun. We like a clean place, good food, a place to work out, a great beach and entertainment on site or near). Any suggestions? All in, the total we'd like to spend per day is $400-600.

I haven't personally stayed there, but Belmond Maroma is a small (60 rooms) non AI LUXURY resort on a gorgeous beach.

We really enjoyed Privilege Aluxes on Isla Mujeres (book a suite though, not a regular room - they aren't that much more expensive and makes a world of difference).

Haven't stayed in PDC but have done some research about that area (was thinking about going but ended up in Isla Mujeres, as I mentioned above). You might want to take a look at the Grand Hyatt Playa Del Carmen. It's pretty new and looks quite nice (in a modern sort of way). And it seems like it is located within walking distance of the 5th Avenue restaurants and shops.
