Mexico or Nicaragua for Beach Loving Adventurers

We spent two weeks in Soliman Bay, Mexico during February of this year. We loved the nice calm water as we have children ages 3 and 5. We overall had a great time. We are starting to plan our vacation for February 2016 and trying to decide if we should go back to the same place in soliman bay or try something new. Nicaragua keeps interesting me. It seems as though it may have more adventure and beautiful landscape offshore in addition to the gorgeous beaches that we seek. Any thoughts on what destination might better suit our family of four. We don't want big surf as that makes us nervous with small children. We seek calm water, SAFETY is very important of course and a little more adventure that we found in mexico. Perhaps some rainforest hiking would be fantastic. We have been to Costa Rica several years ago before we had children and loved it but we didn't find the pristine beaches that we are seeking. We are traveling from Washington state. If you have suggestions for other Central America destination ideas besides what I'm already thinking that would be appreciated too.

Hard to beat the southern Maya Riviera for calm water, gorgeous beaches and jungle exploration opportunities.

Vieques, Puerto Rico has a lot of amazing beaches that are frequently deserted.

Thanks so much RAC......we ventured into the Siaan kaan biosphere in February and were amazed at the amount on garbage and sea grass on what would have been pristine beaches. Perhaps we will experience this in most areas of Central America as well. It's heartbreaking as Americans to see such pollution. We were just putting feelers out for great beaches and adventure in another area. We did love the riviera maya and would be happy to return. Do you specific adventure recommendations for Riviera Maya? We had considered a day trip to explore isla holbox or isla mujeres (although we try to avoid crowded beaches so this one may be out) on our next trip.

The Corn Islands off the coast of mainland Nicaragua have stunning beaches. Not good for exploring the rest of Nicaragua though.

I've only been to San Juan del Sur on the Pacific coast, beaches are ok, but, do not compare to the Yucatan in terms of blue water and soft, white sand.

San Andres and Isla Providencia also have lovely beaches. Part of Colombia, but, geographically closer to Nicaragua. Can be reached via Panama City.
