Mexico City to Puebla to Oaxaca

First trip to Mexico and after reading lots of good points on here...I would like to ask the forum some questions.
Good places to stay to get a feel for the culture. Not necesarry looking for AI..
I only have a week in January 2012 and would like to see and do alot.
What is the best way to get from Mexico City to Puebla and then to Oaxaca?
I will be travelling solo
Organized tours better to see more in a short amount of time or walking on my own?
In to mexico City...I don't mind leaving from another in order to maximize time.

Any and all suggestions appreciated!

Hi Azul --

I don't believe you'll find any AIs in the locations you want to visit.

Puebla is about two hours by bus from Mexico City -- there is a direct bus to and from the airport, by the way, Oaxaca is about four hours by bus from Puebla and about six hours direct from Mexico City. There is also an airport in Oaxaca, but you might want to take a bus at least one way -- the landscape is beautiful,

You might want to take an organized tour to Monte Alban in Oaxaca, or maybe to Teotihuacan in MC, but generally you'll save money and see what you want to see fine on your own.

My itinerary on a similar trip was into MC, bus to Oaxaca, bus to Puebla, bus to airport.

Let us know you particular interests and perhaps we can give you better information.

If you have no intention of staying in Mexico City, take the bus from the airport to Puebla. You may want to read my trip report; click on my name to find it. We used public transportation and taxis to visit the surroundings of Puebla.

Hola!

Buses to Puebla depart Mexico City daily from many points around the city, including the airport, TAPO station, and the Angel of Independence (by the U.S. Embassy). As FD points out, it's about a 2-hour ride from the airport to the main CAPU or smaller 4 Pte station (which I find more convenient), depending on traffic.

The bus company is called Estrella Roja, and you can find schedules and info in English here: http://www.estrellaroja.com.mx/english/index.php
Tickets are about 200 pesos one way.

It’s easy and fairly inexpensive to get around Puebla by bus or taxi. You can also hire a car with a driver, which can be less expensive and safer than renting a car on your own.

There’s *lots* to see, do, eat, and explore in and around the city of Puebla. If you're looking for additional travel tips, check out my blog (I live here): AllAboutPuebla.com.

From Puebla, you can take ADO buses from the main CAPU station to Oaxaca. It's about a 3.5-hour ride. The website is: www.ado.com.mx/ The page isn't loading at the moment, so I can't check the price ... but I suspect it will be back up soon!

Have a wonderful trip!

Oaxaca to Puebla is a big highway so there's not so much curves nor bumpy - expect a 4:30 h journey.

Azul2012, if you only have a short time to visit Mexico and want to see something completely different go straight to Oaxaca and visit all the area: Museums and markets of Oaxaca, Monte Alban, Mitla, Hierve el Agua... Oaxaca it's called the heart of Mexico, there is so much to see, do and eat!
In contrast to the peaceful Oaxaca, Puebla is over-crowed. However, if you still want to discover Puebla, 2 days will be enough - and 1 day will be ok.

I don't know where puraaventura is coming from, but the highway from Puebla to Oaxaca is plenty curvy, especially for a bus. But a fantastic drive.

Hi all! I've just done the drive on a ADO bus this weekend and I can assure you that there is almost no curves (only a few arriving at Oaxaca and also from Puebla to Mexico City - nothing comparable with the crazy curves from Oaxaca to Huatulco!)

Anyway, ask for a seat at the front, it will be more comfortable

ADO were wonderful!

I don't think that bus ride is that windy.. the bus from Oaxaca to San Cristobal de las Casas - NOW THATS WINDY! I literally thought we were going to die with all the rain and slippery mud.
