I will be in Mexico city for three nights in December en route to a vacation in Costa Rica. My wife and I (60's) and two sons (30's) will be landing on the 23rd so we will have two full days - Christmas Eve and Christmas Day - plus the 26th as we don't fly out until 9:00 pm.
We have a hotel already booked in the historic centre, Gran Hotel Cuidad de Mexico.
I would really appreciate help with a bit of an itinerary plan for those days, bearing in mid that it's Christmas time.
What sights should we not miss?
23rd December
We arrive mid afternoon so would plan on a bit of exploring close to the hotel.
24th December
I read that Xochimilco is popular both on Sundays and Christmas Eve which will coincide. If we plan to go there then will we need to book a boat? What is best way to travel to Xochimilco
25th December
I need advice and suggestions. A trip to another part of the city? Possibly hire a guide?
26th December
Was thinking of a couple of museums or galleries.

Things will likely be pretty much shut down on Christmas Day in the DF. But you may be able to get a tour or hire a guide to go to Teotihuacan, the spectacular ruins just outside Mexico City. If so, that is what I would do.

We were at the Teotihuacan site last year and found it to be a very worth while outing and would also strongly recommend it, only problem is that you will be there all day and time seems to be an issue here. You could also visit the Castle in the main park right next to the anthropology museum across the street, also a worthwhile visit, take a tour bus ride or visit the old city and cathedral, or visit Frida Kahlos house all easily done. As for the Xochimilco outing, it would be basically like the pyramids, a good distance and time involved...Either way, as mentioned Christmas might b play a big role in being able to access these sites.

Thank you both. I will try to get a guide for Teotihuacan on Christmas day. Several websites appear to have that day available.
