mexico city and puebla?

Want to spend my birthday and anniversary with a combined trip but unsure of how much time is needed for both or should we just spend a week or 8 days in Mexico City? I understand Puebla is an easy 2 hour bus ride.
I have been to Mexico many times, but it was long ago.
DH and I love good food, art, museums, etc so think this would be an good choice for us. 2/23-3/4 are tentative dates depending on your feedback.

I think 8 days would give you enough time to experience some of the best of both without rushing too much, even though there are those that would spend all 8 days in CDMX. One thought might be to take a bus directly from MEX to Puebla upon arrival. It would make for a long travel day, but you'd avoid having to change hotels more than once.

Not sure what you have seen in DF but you can easily spend 8 days in Mexico at a slow pace and appreciate what you might have missed, such a beautiful city and so entertaining.

If you love good food and art and muséums then you are in the right city.
Not sure where to start except to find a good hotel in a popular neighbouhood such as Roma or Polanco. Then there is the hop on , hop off bus rides (fantastic). Chemultepec the park, the Castillo and the museum, just incredible. Then you have Frida kahlo in Coyoacan, the ruins of Theoteoacan the boats in Xcomilco, the old city with cathedral and excavated ruins nearby, restaurants galore and so so much more. Please keep in mind that this is not Cancun, it is just like Europe where people dress properly and act accordingly, We never had an issue with safety or taxis or any form of transportation. Poeple are friendly and helpful and if you want shopping, then just head to the designated areas for extraordinary clothes and shoes and everything up to date... please forgive my spelling for certain destinations.

On our first visits to CDMX we stayed in the centro historico. Now, we pretty much always opt for Roma or Condesa for dining/nightlife options, but will venture to centro during the day. We've walked to centro from Roma, it's about 45 minutes and looks closer than it is on a map. Our hotel of choice is the Stanza, right on Alvarado Obregon, where you can easily and safely walk to many of the city's more popular restaurants. Never stayed in Polanco, and not a fan at all of Zona Rosa, though some are. If you do stay the entire time in CDMX, you always have the option of a day trip to Puebla. Personally, I don't like such long travel days, but it's certainly doable.
One downside about combining CDMX/Puebla is that as big cities, you won't experience as big of a contrast as you would if you'd combine CDMX with let's say Taxco, Guanajuato, or San Miguel. But all those are much longer bus rides.

Last Feb. we spent 6 days in Mexico City and 3 days in Puebla. We flew into MEX and took the bus directly from the airport to Puebla, an easy 2 hour ride. Click on my name if you want to see my TR.

We loved Mexico City enough to return there for another week as part of this winter's one month trip to the Yucatan and MEX. There is so much to do there that one could easily spend several weeks there if you like museums and sightseeing. BTW, we stayed in the historic district for all 6 nights and that worked well for us.
