Mexico City
I am planning a trip by myself to Mexico City. I'm thinking of staying in the Zona Rosa area, can anyone offer advise on good hotels in that area and bars/clubs to go to. Also what are the pitfalls and dangers to look out for.

Thanks.

By yourself, be very aware of petty thievery -- pickpockets etc on the subway and in crowded places. If you use a backpack, wear it in front. Don't wear expensive or valuable jewelry etc.

There have also been incidences of tourists taking non-licensed taxis and getting "hijacked" and robbed. Your hotel might be able to arrange a car and driver for some of your stay if it's in your budget.

You don't say if you are male or female. I love Mexico City, but the poverty is terrible. I don't think I could enjoy myself alone there as I would be concerned about safety issues, and believe me I am not a fearful traveler.

I've been to Mexico City a few times (mostly overnights on the way somewhere else), but we spent 4 nights there in March. I was with my husband, but I think I'd feel ok going there on my own. (Believe me, I would worry if my husband were there on HIS own - he can get lot anywhere!) Yes, you do have to worry about petty thievery, but you don't have to be paranoid about it. Re taxis, we always took taxis from our hotel or taxi stands on this trip. We didn't take the subway at all.

We stayed just behind the big Cathedral at the Zocalo. Great area - lots to see and do there. We had stayed in the Zona Rosa area on other trips.

We're going back to Mexico next February and will have a night in Mexico City again. I'm really looking forward to it!

I'm also planning a trip to Mexico City on my own. I'm going to San Miguel first and then heading to Mexico City the last 3-4 days of my trip. I have many of the same concerns about traveling there alone. I'm wondering when you are going--maybe we can meet up and have some safety in numbers? Feel free to write to me directly. Thanks.
