Which would you choose? Looking for cultural attractions, easy to get around on foot, safe and relaxing, warm in winter, affordable. Also, please recommend accomodations. Thanks for your help!

Cuernavaca vs. Taxco. They couldn't be more different. Cuernavaca is starting to be a big City. I think its around a million. Other than the downtown it is too big to get around on foot. I like the centro area, but not nearly as much as say- Oaxaca City. Taxco is much smaller, has more of a colonial town feel, easy to walk around, etc. I would add Gunajuato and Oaxaca city as possibilities to your list.

5 days may be too much in either Taxco or San Miguel. Now, as Dude says, Oaxaca is a completely different matter, and it fits what you're looking for pretty well. Another thing you could do is combine San Miguel and Guanajuato.

Thanks so much for introducing me to Guanajuato! I had heard of Oaxaca, but thought it was further from Mexico City. One of the attractions for us to go to Cuernavaca is the apparent warm microclimate since we'll be going in winter. Can anyone comment on that? We may add on an extra day in Mexico City, so may only stay in one of these places 4 nights (3 full days) and really want a nice to relax, soke up sun, culture and stroll around. Can anyone suggest central moderately priced accomodations in any of these places- $85-100/night?

Hotel Luna in Guanajuato was a nice find for us on a very recent trip. It's mainly renovated and sits right on the main square. Our room which was nicely furnished and a good size overlooked the Jardin which could be a bit noisy at night with the Mariachis playing and on a couple of occassions the mussice from a noisy bar down the street. The rooms on the street behind might be a better bet.
Fter taking advantage of a 10% recution for cash, we paid 860pesos a night including tax and breaakfast. V. Good we thought.
IMHO 2 nights there would probably be enough

Cuernavaca is wonderful, land of eternal spring. We stay at Las Mananitas, over $200+ per night, but if you don't stay there, be sure and enjoy a lunch or dinner there. We took the bus to Taxco for the day and had a ball, mostly shopping for silver jewelry.

Just returned from Curenavaca. If you decide on that location you can do a day trip easily to taxco and I would recommend it. The bus system is wonderful and it is an easy and comfortable drive. We stayed at yourhostinn.com a B & B and the price range for two people in a lovely bedroom/bath is $65 to $77 including breakfast which is just wonderful. Check out their website. It is about 5 blocks from the city center but everything is hilly in the city so you need a little more energy than the mileage implies. Easy/cheap cabs. We walked home late at night, empty streets, felt totally safe always.

Well, I would vote for San Miguel de Allende. Quinta Loreto Hot is $40. US in the high season, but rooms go up from there.
