Maya Riviera to Belize or Costa Rica or Panama?

My wife & I will be attending a wedding somewhere on the MR next spring & we were wondering how practical it would be to extend our vacation to include either of the above destinations(not all three!)
How does a person get from here to there? Airplane? Bus? Rental car?
Hopefully one of the many Fodorites can advise me

Belize is relatively easy to get to from the Yucatan. You can fly from Cancun to Belize City on Tropic Air, though it's fairly pricy.

You can take an overnight bus from Cancun to Belize City.

You can take any of the regularly scheduled buses, that run frequently from anywhere along the coast to Chetumal on the southern Mexican border, then, either catch a water taxi to Ambergris Caye, or cross the border and travel on from there by either bus or rental car.

A few rental car companies will allow their cars to cross the border.

Panama and Costa Rica are much, much further. You would want to fly. Not sure about airlines or routing. You may well end up being routed back through Miami.

For what it's worth, there'd plenty to see and do on the Yucatán Pensula to keep you busy.

Of the 3, Belize would be the obvious choice for me. My photos with blog, travelogue, and review links on the main page of each collection are below in case you're interested - all my recommendations from our 4 visits to Belize and 2 to Yucatán are embedded there.

Happy trails!

Forget Panama and Costa Rica. Probably simpler to book a separate trip to those places.

If you had to, you could add Belize. But honestly I think you'd be much better off exploring other parts of the Yucatan and maybe Chiapas as well.

I have to agree with all 3 comments here above. It's a no brainer...you are in one of the most sought after areas in the whole country of Mexico, not to mention that you have one of the 7 wonders of the world at your disposal... a few hours away, yet, you consider moving on further south to another country altogether. It's like going to Paris, but instead of seeing the Eiffel Tower and the Chateau de Versailles you choose to go to Tunisia to check out the desert... Go figure !

I need to clarify something here. We've been to Mexico many, many times - both coasts. We're only going this time for the wedding, otherwise, Mexico is no longer a destination for us - there are other places to go - like Belize if you are sort of nearby?
My fault for leaving this "little" detail out.

In that case you could do Belize or even the Peten area of Guatemala.

Thanks all. I'll look into Belize - probably by overnight bus

We've been to Belize a couple of times and loved it. Really like Victoria House on Ambergris. If you want rustic get away from it all, the Lamanai Outpost Lodge is fun. Closer to ruins Chaa Creek is nice.
