If this serves as an example, my parents (both Spanish but living in different countries) met thru a magazine article and started writing to each other, ever more frequently.
After 1 1/2 years, they were married by proxy, and met when my mother arrived from Spain, never having seen each other except by pictures.
I was born 9 months later, followed by my brother and sister, two years apart each.
They were married for 40 years, after which my father passed away.
It has nothing to do with where a person is from, but anytime you marry someone you don't know, your probably asking for trouble!

To the previous Smart-Ass:
Actually, you are incorrect. We English speakers spell Columbia with the u. My second language is Spanish, and yes, native Spanish-speaking people spell it with the o. Go get a f-ing education.

Sorry about the spelling thing, you are right, it is Colombia. But that doesn't help with my question. I would like to know about Bogota, customs of the people, etc.

i have been to colombia 6 times. bogota, cali, cartegena, barranquilla.

girls from bogota are more sophisticated, better educated and apt to marry at an older age- just like girs from big cities here.

i have met girls through parties via matramonial agencies. i would not like to fall in love with a girl via mail, then find out she is much fatter than her picture. a lot of time can be wasted.

i like the girls from barranquilla. there are less complecated, more open and less serious. mi novia is from barranquilla.

i would have several backups if i were going to bogota to meet one girl that i only met by mail. what if she is out of town when you get there? what if she has another boyfriend? you don't think you are the only guy she is writing to do you?
if you know someone less than a year and you marry them, you deserve what you get.

Jay,

I think it all comes to a case by case basis. I have a very close example, my sister met a guy from the Netherlands through ICQ, they chatted for weeks, months, met 4 times, got married. They have been married for almost 3 years, have a beatiful baby, he is a great guy (I consider my sister to be a great person also) and they live very happy in the Netherlands.

Good people and bad people can be found everywhere. My sister said that chatting gave them the opportunity to talk much more than in a "normal" relationship, as it was the only thing they could do (no going to the movies, traveling, etc.).

Good luck,

Mo

I am planning to marry a lady from Bogota this month (lives in US) and visited her there a few years ago. The people are great, but stay with a local that knows areas to avoid. Food is exceptional, women are beatiful, spirited and insanely jealous, be faithful!!!

I happen to be an american-born woman of 100% Colombian descent. In fact I have the majority of my family still in Bogota. Well, if indeed this girl of yours turns out to be "the one." Then I congratulate you because the women of Bogota are beautiful (if you don't mind my saying so!) we are loyal to the end, VERY family oriented, affectionate and God-fearing. My aunt married a Georgian man, she learned to speak English and they are very happy. As far as traveling to Bogota, just be sure you always have someone with you showing you where to go. Please don't go out at night by yourself! And do yourself a bigger favor and take the time to get to know her...I can say many wonderful things in general, but then again, she may be looking for a free ride to the US...us Colombian woman can be very astute!!

I would not discourage you from traveling to COLOMBIA. Bogota is a cool city as well as the rest of Colombia.
For I have been to colombia many times my wife is from Neiva Colombia.
Make sure that you have her and her family pick you up at the airport. todo tranquila. Even if your spanish is very good be careful not to speak much around strangers. Never speak english in public. If you travel in taxi sit in the back seat. and never discuss travel plans around strangers. I know it sounds paranoid but you want to use precautions in colombia. Aside from that traveling with the family is no problem. Bogota is safe if you use common sense. There are fun things to do there I like the salt cathedtral north of bogota. As far as marrying.
You need to share common values the women from colombia are beautiful if you marry por purely looks your taking a bigger risk. If it feels right hey go for it.. Good luck.
