I wnet in August and enjoyed the 4 day hike to Machu Picchu. The guides however said that they enjoy the rainy season the most because of the greenery, more birds and animals.
If you can go in April or, better yet, May, you should have good weather and will be able to enjoy the place before the monster high-season crowds arrive.
I was there in March and had one gorgeous, bright blue day with the intense green of the mountain, the next day it was foggy and poured rain. The light was amazing on both days!
