Looking For Peace and Quiet
For years I've had this fantasy of taking a vacation by myself to a place where I can simply relax. Does anyone know where I can find such a place:
- Timeframe: end of June, beginning of July -- two weeks
- Location: Caribbean, Mexico, or Central America (I'm on a budget and the airfare will be less expensive than flying to Greece!)
- Accomodations: small cottage or house rental (no hotel or resort)
- on the beach
This is what I'm looking for: I wake up in the morning, fix a simple breakfast, and eat it on a porch or veranda, looking at the ocean and listening to the wildlife. After breakfast, I take a walk along the beach and later go for a swim. I read. I eat a simple lunch, take a nap, wake up and go for another walk. Maybe another swim. Read some more. Some windsurfing would be nice, I suppose. I eat dinner, on the veranda, watching the sun set over the water, feeling the breeze. I listen to some music, read some more. Watch the night fall. Maybe take another walk on the beach. Go to bed early.
Yeah...that probably sounds boring to many people, but it's what I need and want. For some reason, I keep thinking of Costa Rica. On the Pacific side. It would be great to find a small house on the beach with a housekeeper/cook who could come by in the evenings and cook the dinners.
Is there anything like this out there?
Thanks.

Please google (or whatever) for Casa Bambu.
There are four simple houses on or near the beach
on the property.
They fit your description *perfectly.*
BdC (Bosque del Cabo) is not conveniently located
near a beach.

Cheap, non-touristy, lovely beach pretty much deserted? Kind people? I rode south from Mexico to Tierra del Fuego and back to New York on my Honda 125 - not in a hurry, wandering rather than racing. Six months south, eleven on the northern leg. A village in Mexico might suit you, Barra del Cruz some 120 Kilometers up the coast from Tehuantepec. I stopped off there both on the southern leg and on the way back (descriptions on my BLOG). I also yearn to return to San Francisco Coyote on the Nicoya Peninsular, Costa Rica. Tiny hill village, cabins behind the store.lovely beach down below.

I definitely think the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica would be perfect for you. We stay at Bosque del Cabo, but I'm sure you could find a house rental near the beach if you look online. The Osa is full of wildlife; we saw all 4 kinds of monkeys, a sloth, an anteater, wild scarlet macaws and toucans - great place and lots of solitude. BdC sits up on the cliff, so you have to hike down quite a bit to get to the beach. They do have houses you can rent if you're interested, but they would have a view of the beach, rather than being on the beach.

Maybe head over to vrbo.com and check out the house rentals.
For Pacific side of CR, look under Potrero, Playa Potrero, Playa Penca -- Playa Penca is where you want to be to do exactly as you describe.
Or the southern Caribbean coast of CR -- Puerto Viejo, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva. This is probably where we'll go for our next vacation to do just as you describe -- with some good wildlife sightings thrown in. In Punta Uva: Casa Viva, Villa Toucan, Pachamama -- all sound like paradise as I watch the chilly April showers come down!
