Long weekend in Costa Rica

Hello All,

I am planning an almost impromptu trip to Costa Rica over the July 4th weekend. Based on what I've read so far, looks like its best to stay put in one place, considering I only have 3 full days.
So I plan on arriving into SJO around 6 PM on Friday
Then, take a private taxi to Arenal (so reach Arenal by 10 PM)
Below are the activities I plan to cover over Saturday, Sunday and Monday; before heading back to SJO on Tuesday AM:
Eco Termales Fortuna (hot springs)
Arenal Hanging Bridges
Arenal Volcano
La Fortuna Waterfall
Hikes around the park
Coffee Plantation/Chocolate tours

I am not interested in beaches or spas or adventure sports (rafting, zip-lining, boat rides etc.) I'd rather stay on the ground and explore via walking or drives.

So some questions:
1. Is it safe to take the personal taxi after nightfall? (35 male, first time traveling solo)
2. I plan to travel no reservations for the most part - so that being said, is it easy to find reasonable (<100 per night) accommodations in Arenal without prior booking?
3. Is it better to buy tours/packages at the airport kiosks or once I get to Arenal?
4. Any ideas on how I can split my activities over the 3 days?
5. Anything else I can pack in/must see while I am there?

Thanks!

We've used Carlos Bogarin with Destinos Encantados if you need a driver rec.

http://destinos-encantados.com/

Check the Arenal Observatory Lodge or Silencio del Campo for lodging - both popular spots, not sure what their current rates are.

Desafio is good for tours; they have a good website if you want to check it out. Sunset Tours is also good.

We enjoyed dinner at Eco Termales.
