Logistics ?? for 1st Night Cancun, Next Day to Akumal

We arrive in Cancun around 5PM and do not want to do the drive to Akumal in the dark, so where to stay for one night-end Jan 2005.
We won't care about nightlife, just a nice place to relax, good food & drink, and easy to get on the road the next day.

Also, should we pick-up our rental car at the airport and park it at hotel for one night ? Is this easiest or are there better alternatives?
Thanks!

The lower end of the hotel zone will be slightly closer to the airport. (15-20 min.)

I would think picking up your car at the airport and parking at the hotel would be very convenient.

There are so many nice hotels... the Hilton is in a good spot, the Westin might be closest. I wouldn't go much further north than the Ritz. It'll be a quick hour drive south to Akumal in the morning.

Thanks frankie-I will take a look-
at the map of the hotel zone again.
Any reason to stay 2 nights to
explore-not shop-architecture or such or is it just too "city"?

Sun Palace is nice and on the lower end close to the airport. It's part of www.palaceresorts.com

The biggest reason to stay in Cancun for me is the incredibly white soft sand and the Carribbean... a lot of people like it better further south, but there's a reason the Mexican government chose to build a tourist town there!
If you can afford it, check out the JW Marriott for a night or 2...it gets uniformly great reviews...my favorite hotel ever!

The drive to Akumal is easy. It is a divided four lane highway almost all the way. Also, Cancun is closer to the equator so it does not get dark as early there this time of year. If it were me, I would get out of Cancun as soon as possible. Cancun is an ugly plastic imitation of Mexico and is best left to the drunken frat boys and girls (in my opinion).

Cancun gets a bad rap. I don't care for the top part of the hotel zone where all the bars and clubs are, or the loud AI resorts.

But there are some gorgeous resorts in Cancun, with awe inpiring views...

You all are so helpful, thanks!
We want to be about 20 mins from the airport the first night so we may try something in Puerto Morales. Then
we can go on to PDC and do a grocery
stock-up before Akumal.
We don't realy want a hotel zone
place, but don't know where else to perch and un-wind for one night.
Any other thoughts?

If you want to stay in Puerto Morelos, Villas Playasol gets good reviews (though I haven't stayed there).

http://www.villasplayasol.com/

Ceiba Del Mar Spa Resort, Secrets Excellence Riviera Cancun, Azul Hotel & Beach Resort, Paradisus Riviera Cancun, or Cabanas Puerto Morelos are reviewed at tripadvisor.com
