Location in Recoleta
Planning an extended stay in Buenos Aires in March for about 9 months or so. Figure for the first month I'll make base camp in Recoleta til I get my bearings. Like the safety and being in the center of the action.
Have investigated a ton of apartment rentals. Some good ones don't have 24 hour security. How essential is that if you're in a nighborhood like Rodriguez Pena/Guido....Guido/Junin...Rodriguez Pena/Posada...etc...?
Do you think it's better to be located close to the Village center since you can walk out your door and have everything there?
Or would I be better off closer to Libertad? Too isolated?
How about the other side of the tracks across from Las Heras around Rodriguez Pena/Pena? Or Azcunaga/Vicente. Can you walk safely to the village cventer at night?
How would you break down the the neighborhoods within the neighborhood?
Help!
Thanks guys...

Let's see what top expert drdawggy has to say about this, but I feel the whole area you mention is reasonably safe.
I suggest you should stay in a hotel for the first few days and rent an apartment only after inspecting it yourself. For such a long stay, you should be able to get a very good price.
It's wholly a matter of taste, but I wouldn't want to be caught dead near the Village center.

Can understand as a local not wanting to be near a main tourist destination, AV. But being a tourist and not speaking the language yet, or knowing the area, it has it's advantages.
Ultimately gonna head over to Palermo, but Recoleta makes sense as a starting point. Seems like March and April are pretty big tourist months, many of the online apartments rent out, so don't want to have a hotel room for a few days only to panic cause I can't find what I'm looking for.
Figure one month gives me a little time to get things together.
Since i won't have a car and don't want to grab a cab every time I want to go somewhere and do something, especially at night, the question is where in Recoleta to live, and again the difference between the sub hoods and safety.
Looking forward to DD's and anyone else's insight.
