Lima Layover
Fellow Fodorites, I have a problem:
It seems that no matter how I slice it, I'm looking at a five hour layover in Lima on my way back to New York (Cuzco-Lima-NYC). Is it possible to leave the airport for a few hours and hang out somewhere in the city?

hello ncanavan, i wouldn't recommend you to leave the airport unless you've already been to lima before or are familiar with it. i'm actually from lima and as the big city it is, it's kind of dangerous for unaware tourists, especially when they are on their own. if you do decide to leave the airport, you could go downtown and take pictures of the cathedral and some other places. it depends on what you're interested in... if you have any questions just post another message...

Hello,
We were actually in the same situation as you last October on our way to Cuzco. We actually did decide to take a cab outside of the airport, but we were in a group of 5, and just had the taxi driver just take us to a local restaurant. I think it would be ok for you to get out and about if you knew exactly where you wanted to go, but rvt is right, it is a bit dangerous, so just be careful.

Thank you for your replies. The option I'm thinking about is taking a taxi directly to Museo De Oro del Peru, lunch nearby, and then back to the airport. Is that realistic?

I would be interested in information also. A couple of questions:
How far is airport from downtown?
I am trying to pick between Muse de oro or a general city tour.
We arrive in Lima in morning and depart that night, and were thinking to check into a hotel and take a tour from there.
We would either check into a hotel at the airport or go to miraflores.
Ideas?

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with where exactly Museo De Oro del Peru is located. I would imagine that it is feasible if you stay within a 30-40 minute ride (which is what I remember being told how far downtown was) from the airport.
We just ventured around 15 minutes from the airport since we didn't want to risk traffic and our layover wasn't extremely long.

woops, didn't mean to press the post reply button so quickly!
So, ncanavan, with five hours, I would budget around 1-1.5 hours for travel, maybe 2 hours for lunch and quick museum tour, and then you must get back to the gate for your next flight about 1-2 hours before.
Iana, are you all going to have your luggage with you? Or check into a hotel just for your luggage? If you are planning on staying overnight, I would definitely recommend staying near the airport. They have more secure hotels.
Miraflores is a fun area, from what I have heard from my fiance...he went with four of his friends out on the town there.
rvt will probably know more since he is from Lima! But maybe I can help a little.

Thanks Cate, for the information.
Our flight leaves late in the evening about 11:00 p.m. So we really just have the day to play as we will not be spending the night. We will rent a hotel room for the day only. But that way, we can store suitcases, take a shower before the flight, rest if we want. I am just trying to decide where to stay for the day, and what sights we should see. My two options are, stay at airport, arrange cab to Muse oro. Or can go to Hotel Antigua, in Miraflores which sounds charming and they have a city tour. I think we can walk from hotel to look at ocean.

That sounds like a great idea since you have the entire day. I would go into Miraflores then, just make sure that the hotel will have your room ready in the morning and have a cab already arranged (probably can be done by the hotel) for your return to the airport that night.
Sounds like so much fun! Have a wonderful trip!

Traffic in Lima can be appalling. I think you are cutting it fine allowing only 40 minutes each way for transportation. I would allow at least an hour in each direction, possibly more for the return journey. There are quite a few bars and restaurants and hotels near the airport - just take a taxi to one of these. It is a little dangerous in the area around the airport but this should not be a huge concern. Just be careful and alert. It really isn't that bad. It is unlikely you will be stripped naked and shot! We went to a pool bar, a bar and a Chinese reaturant near to the airport when waiting for a flight. Avoid the pool bar.

Hmmm. This is sounding more sketchy all the time. How about Miraflores - is that any easier to get to than central Lima? All I really want to do is get out of the airport for a few hours, have a relaxing breakfast, and then get back on the plane to Arequipa. My layover is from 6:00am to 11:00am.

At 6am you should get downtown or to Miraflores pretty quickly. However, allow at least 60mins (if not 75) to get back to be on the safe side.
Miraflores is nice. There are lots of shops selling Peruvian things and lots of nice bars and restaurants.
The area around the airport and much of downtown Lima are not as nice as miraflores, although they are very interesting places.

i'm sorry we scare you, ncanavan! lima is a city with terrible traffic and can be dangerous at times, but there're definitely good things about lima! i would go to miraflores if i were you it's one of the nicest neighborhoods in lima, along with san isidro, la molina(which is mainly residential and prob 1 hour away from the airport). if all you want to do is have a nice breakfast while looking at the ocean, you could go to larcomar which is opposite of the JW marriott hotel.. in larcomar you'll find different shops and restaurants that are really good...unless you're looking for a more traditional and typical peruvian meal, you'll enjoy the choices larcomar offers..if i'd say you'll take about 45min to get to larcomar from the airport...i hope this helped.. if you have any more questions, just post a new message... btw, when are you coming down to lima?

RTV,
In regards to the fear factor: as a long time resident of New York City I am not particularly adverse to grid-lock and random gunfire, however, I hate being late.
Your advice about Miraflores is much appreciated, and the larcomar suggestion sounds perfect. In fact, my wife works at the Marriot Hotel here in Times Square, so she will probably want to pop in after breakfast.
We will be arriving in Lima the morning of the second, and flying out the 12th.
Thanks again for your generous advice.

Ok,
You read the suggestions, so here's what I actually did: I arranged for an airport pickup to take us to the Miraflores Marriot (twenty bucks, one way). We got picked up promptly at 6:30am and dropped at the Hotel 35min later. The Marriot is located on a high bluff overlooking a park, which overlooks the ocean - fantastic view from the bar/dining room. The Lancomar shopping/recreation center ajoins the park. The hotel is new, beautiful, and very comfortable. We checked our bags, enjoyed the huge breakfast buffet ($11) and painlessly killed the layover. However, getting back to the airport took about 50min.
Not wanting to upset the calm of Machu Pichu, we decided on the same tactic for our layover on the return home. This time we negotiated a $15 cab ride. Dinner and drinks that night was the most expensive night we spent in Peru, but as our flight left late (1am) so I'm very glad we spent the time relaxing, refueling, and getting ready for a nice sleep on the way home.
Perhaps we could have squeezed in another museum in Lima, but I just wasn't up for possible misadventure after things had already gone so well.
