Layover in Mexico City

If I have a 10 hour layover - in transit from Atlanta to Sao Paulo - in Mexico City - is it allowable to leave the airport? I would like to visit the Zocalo area for lunch, but I am not sure what the regulations are for this - ariport and immigration-wise. Thanks.

Once through immigration you are free to go anywhere you wish. Go to the Official taxi stand to get a cab. About 30 to 40 minutes to the Zocalo. Visit the Cathedral as well as both the ruins & museum of the Temple Mayor. Also the various government buildings with huge murals on the Zocalo. The ruins were discovered in the 1970's while digging the subway. Have Lunch high over the Zocalo at the roof top restaurant at the Hotel Majestic. Good food & a fabulous view. Be sure to have the Majestic doorman get you a taxi back to the airport. NEVER get a taxi off the streets. Be sure you have a price before getting in. Have a great day!
OOPs! I see you are in transit, only passing through Mexico. Suggest you check with your airline & the Mexican Embassy for restrictions.

I really don't think you want to be there now through 1 December.

He's referring to the demonstrations by the losing candidate's supporters in the presidential Elections. There has been little violence & none against tourists. We were in Mexico City December 1999 when the Students at the University were on strike. We were told not to go also, but ignored this advice. One day we came up out of the Subway at the Zocalo finding our selves in the middle of literally Thousand of demonstrators. We smiled asking politely to pass through & they parted allowing us to reach our Hotel across the street. Never felt in danger. Just one old gringo's experience.
