Getting a decent last-minute airfare during the holidays is going to be the trick. I'd start by looking for those to any of the three destinations you are considering, then try to find accommodations.

Christmas/New Years is prime time for Costa Rica and Belize, especially in coastal areas, and probably also for Panama, but I'm not very familiar with that country.

There are still a few good lodging choices available in Belize over New Year's, but many places are fully booked.

In Belize, San Pedro (Ambergris Caye) is the place to be for New Years -- lots of fun, safe, friendly and plenty of local celebrations of the New Year.

--Lan Sluder
Hello Lan, I dropped you an email, but did not get a response. I was wondering if you received it. My question was similiar to Sarahs, I am looking to go to Ambergris Caye from Dec. 27th through the 3rd of January. Unfortunately the airfare that I was quoted at 630.00 from San Francisco, is now up to 933.00!

If I can get airfare a bit lower, I would definitely go. I was wondering about the budget hotels. Lillys and Rubys. For a single their prices are pretty reasonable. Are these places fairly clean and safe? Also I had a question re: the airport to fly into. I see several airport codes. BZE and TZA, both for belize city. Any info from you would be appreciated!

Thank you Lan! Anywhere in particular you suggest to try to stay in Ambergris Caye? I just pulled the trigger & got a ticket to go! Happy Holidays.

Rosie, no don't think I got your e-mail. If writing me at above address remove the NOSPAM and use only the rest of the address.

BZE is the International Airport. TZA is the Municipal Airport in Belize City, a small airstrip used only for domestic flights (domestic flights also use the International Airport).

Lily's and Ruby's are decent budget/low moderate hotels. yes, they are clean and safe. Ruby's is very popular though it can be a little noisy. The seafront rooms at Lily's are the way to go if you stay there.

Sarahjane, the recommendation of Banana Beach is a good one. I stay there frequently and as it's larger (now about 65 rooms and suites) it may have a vacancy when other places don't. I also like Mayan Princess, The Palms, Villas at Banyan Bay and Xanadu -- all of these are small condotels which offer a lot of space for not too much money.

--Lan Sluder
