La Paz and Todos Santos

I'm planning a trip to Baja Sur for two adults in December and am thinking of staying in La Paz and possibly a night or two in Todos Santos. Can anyone share their experiences with these towns and things to do there? We are planning to drive between them and are hoping the road goes through some mountains or desert. We hear Baja is beautiful away from the coastline. We are looking for a hotel in La Paz near the malecon and in the center of Todos Santos or near the beach. We've heard Todos Santos has some great colonial architecture and that La Paz is a less touristy place than the resort mecca at the tip of the peninsula. We loved Campeche, Izamal, and Merida and are hoping for a similar experience. Thanks in advance for any help.

I spent two weeks solo in La Paz (about ten years ago). I absolutely loved my hotel www.clubelmoro.com It sits at the edge of the city heading south. Honestly this hotel was my favorite part of the trip.

La Paz is definitely less 'touristy' than Cabo San Lucas. But that also means less tourist ammenities like money change, restaurants, people who speak English. I'm just guessing it might feel similar to Merida as far as general pace?

I just hung around, walking thru the downtown area, along the Malecon, generally exploring on foot. There wasn't much I found "to do" in La Paz (but I mean that in a good way!). Most other visitors I met seemed to be just passing thru or on to go activities like going kayak camping, fishing, diving, whale watching, boating, etc.

There's not a good swimming beach right in the town (more seemed just for the fishermen) but beautiful ones both to the north and south & not too far. I didn't have a car but wished I did.

Sorry don't know about driving across the peninsula, my two Baja trips I flew directly into La Paz one time, and directly into Los Cabos the other.

Agree with Suze. La Paz certainly lives up to it's name as being very peaceful.
They do have a very nice museum within walking distance of The Malacon.
Beaches are definitely out of town. I might such a couple of nights in La Paz & a few more on the East Cape with fabulous beaches & quaint little resorts. The Sea of Cortes has wonderful sights. If you dive/snorkel take a tour.
One of my grandest experiences was diving among Manta Ray & seeing the worlds largest creature The Whale Shark. These gentle giants are truly incredible.
I am not particularly a fan of Todas Santos.
