Hi there! I'm originally from the UK but I now live and work here in Liberia, Guanacaste, at the Universidad de Costa Rica.
I know the JW Marriott very well, it is without doubt one of the best resorts in Central America... it is very safely located within Hacienda Pinilla (which is a huge, exclusive, private project) on a *beautiful* beach. The hotel has 4 restaurants, spa... the works. You can check them out on twitter too and they can answer questions there @JWCostaRica
The closest town is Tamarindo, around 30 minutes drive away. Tamarindo has plenty of shopping areas, it is a very popular beach with tourists...
I've stayed here, it's not the best location for a hotel. The hotel is reached by a dirt road and is a good 30 or so minutes drive from the main road. There is nothing near the hotel, you'll be restricted to the restaurants on sight. The property itself is good, but I would not recommend staying here if you want to sightsee/do activites/visit restaurants, etc in the surrounding area - getting from this hotel to any activity you'd like to do could be chanllenging.
