JUST IN FROM MEXICO CITY

Just returned on May 15th from a week in Mexico City. The smog was the worst I have ever seen and that wass compounded by a lot of forest fires. The city is a beautiful one but because of the smog and warnings about attacks on tourists we limited ourselves, probably far too much. Hired a cab through the Citio and the driver waited for us at each stop. We dressed in pants or dresses usually with money hidden. I carried a small back pack with camera, maps etc.. Went to the Belles Artes for the Ballet Folklorico. Was well worth it. Chapultepec park, Anthropological Museum (fantastic!), Pyramids of Teotihuacan and walked to the top of Pyramid of the Sun- WOW! Wonderful display there. San Angel sabado market, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera's homes, the convent. We went to the city of Puebla to try to get into some good weather. Better air, but the fire smoke was there too. Is a beautiful colonial city, was very safe walking in all parts. Real good tourism information. Went to the the kitchen where MOLE was discovered. Had the best Mole ever in Puebla. Talavera, antiques, museums. I would go back there in a minute. My lungs and eyes are recuperating from the effects of the pollution, but my sister e-mailed me and said the sky is almost blue today! We did a lot for a week stay. Feel free to write if you have questions.

Kathy: Too bad about the smoke! I think we just
missed it when we were there. Flying to and from
Mexico City I noticed the fires from the airplane.
They were really extensive! I'm glad to hear you
had a good time. Once we got to Mexico City, we felt
perfectly safe. Your advice about blending in as
much as possible is good. I think we benefited from
safety in numbers (there were 4 of us!). I can't wait
to go back again. Next time or sometime I hope to
make it to Guanajuato. Best wishes for your future
travel!

Dara, Guanajuato is just a fantastic place. The whole city looks like a castle to me. I can just imagine the sound of the spaniard on horseback on those cobblestone streets. It is definitely worth the trip. Thanks for you help before my trip. It all helps.

Just got back from Mexico City on the first. Stayed <BR>in the Zona Rosa section which is a really nice area. I actually felt safe with the three policemen per street corner. I did not have any burning of the eyes or lungs, except when we came back from a day trip to Puebla.
