july travel recos...please!!

i'm new to this site...but by reading through of all of the "Talks"...it sounds like you all can help me!

i'm planning on going on vacation for 1 wk in July (3rd wk) with my boyfriend. we're both pretty active and we're looking to enjoy some outdoor adventure, as well as soak up some culture (not so much the tourist attractions, but more of the unbeaten paths and hidden gems!).

initially, we were thinking south america (ie. argentina, chile) but i don't think july is the ideal time to go. plus, i don't know if 1 wk is enough time? (flying from nyc)

we've also thrown out croatia and central america (ie. guatamala, costa rica)...but we really are open to anything. ideally, we'd like to keep the cost under $3000-$3500 for the 2 of us...but again, if there's something that's worthwhile, we'll have to re-think our budget.

any recommendations?? thanks in advance!

Panama. It is rainy season, but go prepared and it won't interfere with your holiday. Hiking, birding, wildlife and gorgeous beaches.
Check out the posts on this board. It is a gorgeous country.

Panama is an excellent choice (next on my list!. We have also LOVED Guatemala, Honduras, and Belize, all visited in the summer. In Belize, many folks plan 3-4 nights in the San Ignacio area (hiking, caving,
ruins, including Tikal over the border in Guatemala) and the rest on an island or beach (Caye Caulker, Ambergris Caye, Hopkins, or Placencia?).

In Honduras, the LaCeiba area is known for great hiking, rafting, canopy ziplining, Garifuna villages, and nightlife, and it's the jumping off point for the Bay Islands. I spent several weeks in Copán Ruinas, Honduras last year and loved it.

Can't miss either way! Happy trails...

All of the above are great choices. I went to belize last summer and absolutely loved it. It has a good mix of adventure, culture and beach. Since you mentioned Croatia as a possibility, I will tell you that is a gorgeous country as well. Classic Mediterranean beaches (try Hvar or Brac), beautiful medieval cities (especially Dubrovnik), and delicious seafood. Since the euro is so strong right now, Croatia might be a little more expensive, though you might be able to find some good deals there too.
Whatever you choose, happy planning!

If you are really adventurous, check out Jaguar Reef Lodge at www.jaguarreef.com. I have never been so excited about a place - it was a blast.

You can also check out my trip report & photos at "Jaguar Reef Belize Trip Report". Photos at http://webpages.charter.net/cvechkol...zeTrip2006.htm .

Argentina is perfect with your budget. You find good service for really good price! Northen Argentina is highly recommended. TA`s reviews could be helpful.
