Jaco Beach and surrounding areas!

Hey Guys... My buddy and I are heading to Jaco beach area for 10 days June 19. I have gotten mixed reports on that area and I had some questions. The surf is great I hear, but what about other activities. How are the canopy tours around there? Mountain biking? Jungle adventures? Also how is the nightlife there, we have gotten mixed reports. What towns/cities near there are worth looking into, or are they even a better choice to stay in? What we want to do is basically relax, take it day by day, beach bum it some, but also mix in a few activities here and there, and enjoy our nights at local dance clubs/bars, and beach bars drinking our MARGARITAS and just relaxing south american style! We think were looking in the right area....are we? be specific please...THANKS

Jaco 20 yrs ago was kind of " the " cool surfer place , but things have moved on a bit . Montezuma has supposedly a very cool vibe , and a very interesting mix of people . Anything from old hippys to young hippys and all and everything in between . Something for everyone ! Great little restaurants , small inns and hotels , a just a few places to party , but a great "scene " . Malpais is sort of the new " it " place , lots of surfers , surf camps both luxe and basic , and I believe a bit more of a party scene . Lots of nature , waterfalls , great beaches , etc. Tamarindo a bit further North , in somewhat of a dryer area , but very popular , also surfing and lots of partying and stuff that goes along with it . Just be careful !!!

A few KMs south of Jaco is Playa Hermosa geared pretty much for surfers. It has a small range of hotels and a few restaurants and stores all in front of one of the better breaks on the Pacific coast - the scene of several surfing contests. Hope this helps....

I would be very careful about traveling in this area. Over Easter week my family and I went to Costa Rica to surf and ended up being victims of a violent murder attempt and robbery. We were attacked on a rural beach road, they cut us off and the passenger exited the car and immediately started to shoot into the driver and passenger compartment of our car. He hit the car five times, twice on the hood, twice through the windshield and once through the driver's side door. It is by the grace of God that we are alive. It happened in the Hermosa area. Crimes against tourist are not kept unless it is a homicide. GO TO ANOTHER COUNTRY TO SURF!!!!!!!

Hey Lotus,
Jaco was great!I just returned from what was supposed to be a two week trip, ended up living there for 3+ months!!Lots to do in jaco. The beaches and the surrounding nature mountains are beautiful...and you can enjoy the nightlife, restaurants, tours, horsebackriding, hiking ,surfing,or just bake in the sun.I stayed at the catalina hotel which has kitchenettes,a pool, and it's on the beach.the owners are great. If i were you, i would spend half my trip there and head to montezuma/manuel antonio.or tamarindo.it's just a few hours with the bus. It's a must see.
the hotel info is www.hotelcatalinacr.com

Wow Hilly, Thats a heavy incident that happened. I know a lot of people dont have faith in the policia in CR, but I hoped you folks reported this incident. I surfed Hermosa and never had anything happen except for a drunk driver that nearly ran me and my son off the road while were driving from Herradurra to Hermosa to surf.
