Considering a trip next March, which is the height of Cancun spring break season. Isla Mujeres looks nice for its laid back uncrowdedness. Is that peace and quiet disturbed during the day by daytrippers from Cancun ? Since there aren't that many beaches on Isla, it seems like the beaches there can push maximum density pretty easily if enough people come over on ferries (or booze cruises -- yikes) during the day. Can someone who has been there during spring break give me some insight? Thanks so much! I appreciate it.

I haven't been during spring break, but I can tell you that several of the 'booze cruises' have their own beach clubs that they go to. Since most of those cruises provide food and drink, people tend to stay where they've already paid. These places are not on Playa Norte, so I don't think it would be too terribly crowded.

I'll be interested in hearing what others who have been there at peak times have to say.

We were in Playa del Carmen this March and it wasn't crowded with spring breakers at all.

We just got back from two weeks in IM and PDC Monday, and we spent almost all of our time on Playa Norte.

When we were there, the daytrippers coming over provided some interesting people-watching and kind of crowded the downtown area, but that's when I'm at the beach anyway so I didn't mind.

We did ask the hotel staff about whether or not they get a lot of spring breakers, and they said the few that they get are well-behaved and are looking to skip the craziness of Cancun.

All in all, I never felt like the daytrippers were overwhelming, but it helps to know where they are going to be and avoid those areas.

For example, a big ole' booze cruise pulled up to Sergio's Playa Sol for lunch and live music, but they ate and were gone just in time for us to to go up there and eat. (We eat lunch late.)

Maybe during high season they get more of them, but it was no problem for us during the week that we were there.

I had really mixed impressions of Isla Mujeres. We first spent a week there a few years ago and loved it. But we were back again a couple of years ago and I wasn't nearly as impressed. We weren't staying on Playa Norte, and I was shocked by the loud music the first night we were there. It was a distance away, but maybe it was the wind that carried it. I felt like I was at a rave! It was really annoying. However, we didn't have that experience the rest of the week - at least at night, although we did hear music from the cruises every day.

Yes lots of day trippers but they do not interfere with the local tourists.
Norte beach is off their radar screen. The tour operaters like to keep the
daytrippers under their control.
No problem from spring breakers. The kids that come over all want to escape the nutty scene in Cancun.

We stayed in Cancun at the JW Marriott. It was expensive, but very nice. (Ypu wouldn't have to worry about spring breakers here.)
This summer we're on a tighter budget and we're planning on staying in Playa Del Carmen.

First time we stayed at Hotel Belmar, which is right in town, above Pizza Rolandi. This was a few years ago, but we were really impressed by the hotel. Since we had terrible weather the last part of the trip, we were glad we had a TV! That was the time we enjoyed the island. Second time was in 2001, I think, and we stayed at Mar y Sol, which is a budget place on a beach outside of town. No real complaints about the place or where it was, but we didn't find the island to be as charming as it had been.
